Who was Mephibosheth?
[2 Samuel 4:4] Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.
David shows kindness towards Mephibosheth
A. 主動尋找 – Actively seeking
[2 Samuel 9:1] David asked, "Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?"
[Romans 3:10-11] As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.”
[Luke 19:10] “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
B. 恩典的稱呼 – The Call of Giving Grace
Samuel 9:6-7] When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to
David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, "Mephibosheth!"
"Your servant," he replied. "Don't be afraid," David said to him, "for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
C. 歸還產業 – Returned everything that belonged to him
[2 Samuel 9:9] Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "I have given your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.”
D. 與王子同坐 – Seated with the Princes
[2 Samuel 9:11] 「… Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons. 」
• [Psalm 113:7-8] He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.
Mephibosheth’s Reaction Towards David
Receives Grace and Recognizes His Unworthiness
[2 Samuel 9:8] Mephibosheth bowed down and said, "What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?“
[1 Timothy 1:15-16] Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
Not concerned with being betrayed, but only concerned with David’s
well-being [2 Samuel 16:1-4, 19:24-30]
[2 Samuel 19:24] Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.
David Protects Mephibosheth
[2 Samuel 21:7] The king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD between David and Jonathan son of Saul.
[John 10:28-29] I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.
The Story of Mephibosheth is an Illustration of the Gospel of Salvation
Old Testament: [Psalm 103:10-13]  he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;  as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.  As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
