The Incarnation (a)


  1. Read Psalms 72, 110, and 2.  The Jewish people never had a king this great, and most of their kings were terrible.  What king might the psalmists have had in mind when they wrote these psalms?


  1. Read Daniel 7:1-14.  How does this passage help you understand the meaning of Jesus¡¯ favorite designation of himself?


  1. Read John 8:52-59.  Do you think Jesus didn¡¯t understand the correct use of grammatical tenses?  What does he mean when he says, ¡°I am¡± instead of ¡°I was¡±?


  1. Read John 10:27-30 and 14:1-9.  Whose hands are we in, the hands of Jesus or the hands of God?  What is the good news for Thomas and Philip?



Memorize the names of all the New Testament books in the correct order.

The Incarnation (b)


  1. Read John 1:1-18 and Colossians 1:15-17.  Why does John use ¡°Word¡±  (µÀ) as a name for Jesus?  How did God create the universe (see Psalm 33:6-9)?


  1. Read Proverbs 8:22-31.  In the light of John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15-17, how do you understand Proverbs 8:22-31?  How does John 1:1 take you one step further in your understanding of the Proverbs passage?


  1. Read Colossians 2:9, l Timothy 3:16, and Hebrews 1:1-3.  Why is ¡°Son of God¡±, referring to Jesus, something like a metaphor, and not the same as saying that you are the son or daughter of your parents?


  1. Read John 8:23-30.  Notice the translators¡¯ problem in translating verses 24 and 28.  What is Jesus saying about himself?

  1. Read Acts 16:6-7.  Who was leading Paul and his companions, the Holy Spirit, or the Spirit of Jesus, or the spirit of God?


  1. Read John 14:1-4 and 15-18, Ephesians 1:15-23, 3:14-21, and 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17.   Do you see the three persons of the Trinity here?


  1. Read 1 John 1:1-4 and 4:1-3.  Is Jesus part God and part man, sometimes God and sometimes man, or completely God all the time and completely man all the time?

  1. Read Mark 9:2-8.  What riddle is Jesus posing here for the disciples?  What is the answer?


  1. Read Mark 5:22-34.  Why did the woman think she was doing a bad thing?  How does 2 Corinthians 5:21 help you understand that what she did was exactly what God wanted?

(a)    Do you think this woman could be the same woman who met Jesus in John 8?  Why?

  1. Read Isaiah 60:1-6.  This prophecy seems to be fulfilled in Matthew 2:1-12.  But God still kept one surprise for the fulfillment.  Besides the gifts of gold and incense mentioned in Isaiah, the Magi brought one more gift.  What was it?  What might it mean?


  1. Read John 7:1-9, Luke 9:51-53, Mark 10:32-34 and Luke 13:31-35.  How did Jesus¡¯ behavior change toward the end of his ministry?


  1. Read John 12:20-27. 

(a)    What do you think the Greeks might have wanted to talk to Jesus about?

(b)   What did Jesus mean when he said the Son of Man will be glorified?

(c)    Was the crucifixion a tragic mistake or part of a divine plan?  Or both?  (Note 1 Corinthians 2:6-8)


  1. Read John 13:1-17.  How does Philippians 2:5-11 help you understand the meaning of this incident?


  1. Read John 13:18-27 and Matthew 24 and 25.  Did Jesus call Judas to be a disciple so that Judas could betray him?  Do you se any indications that Jesus did not want Judas to betray him and tried to persuade him aginst doing so?

(a)    It seems there were two trials, one before the Jewish authorities and one before the Roman authorities.  Why was it necessary to have two trials?  (See John 18:29-31)

(b)   What finally settled it for Pilate? (See John 19:12)


  1. Read Isaiah 52:13-53:12.  How many references to Jesus¡¯ crucifixion do you see here?


  1. Read Mark 15:42-47.  John tells us that someone else came with Joseph of Arimathea to take Jesus¡¯ body.  Who was it?  Where have you met him before?  What do you think was going on in his mind?

The Atonement (a)


  1. Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21.

(a)    Luther loved to call the gospel ¡°the wonderful exchange¡±.  What do you think he meant by that?

(b)   Can you see the wonderful exchange in Galatians 3:13, Colossians 2:13-14, and 1 Peter2:22-24 and 3:18?


  1. Read Matthew 4:1-11.  In the light of the wonderful exchange, what is the main point of this story?


3.  Read mark 3:27 and Hebrews 2:14-15.

(a)    How do these passages explain what happened on the cross?

(b)   Can you see this theology in John 12:27-33, 2 Corinthians 4:4, Colossians 1:13-14, and I John 3:8?

(c)    Is this a better way to explain the cross?  Is it easier for people to accept an explanation in terms of victory over the forces of evil, than to accept the idea that they must confess that they are sinners and need to be forgiven?
